What is a Book Companion? 

This book companion gives teachers the tools to break down history into bite-sized pieces for children to understand the remarkable achievements of Booker T. Washington. Each activity goes along with the book.

This resource does NOT include a copy of the picture book. The book must be purchased separately.

About this Resource

The literacy activities included can be completed at any time during the school year. It includes graphic organizers and question stems for teachers to complete a close reading lesson using a picture book in a whole group setting, within small guided groups, or literacy centers.

The activities in this resource are beneficial to all types of learners from ELL, special education students to academically gifted students. The graphic organizers and question stem relating to the text and skill can scaffold students who struggle with identifying character traits and understanding the significance of word choice.

Included in this Resource

The activities in this resource are available as a PDF file ready to print and digitally through Google Slide. Each format includes the following:

· Close Reading Lesson Guide

· Three vocabulary cards include an image and a summary of the event. Each card refers to historical events relevant to the story with an image and a summary of the event.

· Two graphic organizers to analyze character traits and answer keys

· Eight text-dependent questions to discuss character traits and the author’s word choice

· Two mentor sentences with graphic organizers and answer keys

· One graphic organizer template to analyze word choice

· One text-dependent writing prompt

There are NO scripted lessons to follow nor a rubric or an example of the writing response. Please preview the resource and activities to make sure it is right for your class.

Common Core Standards

Common Core Standards RL.4.3 and L.4.6 are the focus of the literacy activities, but older students can benefit from it. Please preview the resource to make sure it is right for your class.

The learning objective is for students to analyze character traits using text evidence and explore words that signal precise actions, emotions, or states of being.
