December is finally here, and so are finding new ways to keep kids writing through winter!
This time of the year can be challenging, with winter break lingering around the corner.
We, teachers, still have to teach when the only thing the kids are thinking about is their winter break. So, what is a teacher to do?
The best way to keep the momentum in the classroom going is by keeping learning engaging and manageable.
Because of this, I'm sharing my favorite winter writing prompts to keep kids writing through these next couple of weeks.

Engaging Winter Writing Prompts for Kids
Writing Prompt 1: A Gingerbread Adventure
In this writing prompt, the kids imagine being the gingerbread cookie and write a story about their adventures.
Before the kids are off to brainstorm their story, I read aloud The Gingerbread Man. Many books are a spin-off of the traditional tale. But they are all fun to read!
Writing Prompt 2: Gifts From the Heart
Christmas is known for the tradition of giving and receiving gifts. In this writing prompt, kids explore the meaning of meaningful gifts or gifts coming from the heart.
In the classroom, this writing prompt makes a great class discussion. My favorite part of this writing activity is when they realized that gifts coming from the heart are always cherished.
Writing Prompt 3: Winter Break Memories
Many kids can't wait to tell their friends what they did over the winter break. Since they all have plenty to say, why not write about it too!
This writing prompt is a great start-up activity because it allows the kids to share their winter break memories with their friends.
Writing Prompt 4: Ringing In the New Year
Making New Year's resolutions can empower your class to set goals to change a behavior or become better writers. In this writing prompt, kids set goals by brainstorming ways to achieve their goals.
In the classroom, I use this to teach the kids about the importance of goal setting. One of my goals with this prompt is to motivate kids to develop a “can-do” attitude and increase their self-esteem.

Wrapping It Up
As teachers, we know practice makes perfect. There are numerous rewards the kids can reap when they write every day.
Their writing stamina goes up, and they have a chance to put those writing lessons into action. But, to reap these rewards, you have to get them to write.
By including thematic writing prompts in your plans makes writing appealing and engaging.
